5 Steps to Start a New Journey
5 Steps To Start A New Journey.
Many, if not most, people wake up one morning and realize, "This is my life, but how did I get here?” These are moments when you really wake up to the reality of your life. Often, when we think about that reality, we think about missteps and regrets.
1. The problem we avoid is the problem we need to face
When you realize there is a problem that you have been avoiding, remember that courage does not mean being “fearless”. In every story, the protagonist has many fears every step of the way. Just remember that you do not have your life together to get started.
2. Identify your goals and objectives
Think about the problem. Yes, it may be a formidable foe. But, notice that is not just one thing but the collection of many smaller issues. Identify each issue, then create a plan to address every smaller problem. Remember this when you are making your plan of attack. Be SMART in your plan of attack: specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely.
3. Make your values your guide
Think about why you are unhappy with your life. Often, we are dissatisfied, shamed, or afraid because we have not lived according to our values. We have not been the person we want to be. Ask yourself, “Who do I want to be?”
4. Rally the troops
While this journey is yours alone, this problem is yours to overcome. However, you do not have to do this alone. Talk to friends, family, spiritual leaders, mentors, or a therapist. They can offer you a different perspective and help you motivate yourself to move forward in every challenge.
5. Remember that progress is not linear
You will continue to make mistakes and have regrets. As you make your journey, it is normal to realize that the terrain of your journey is much different after you have started. Every good story has unexpected challenges, plot twists, pitfalls, victories, and failures. But, the protagonist does not quit.
This is your life, your story. At this moment, it is vital to start dreaming about the person you’ve always wanted to be. Though you may feel you are unprepared, your goals seem unattainable, or you’re just too late. Who knows what you could do or who you could be if you just started your new journey here and now?
